unnatural disasters (2021)

unnatural disasters is a found footage experiment inspired by constructivist theory as it relates to the natural/unnatural binary.

"Unnatural disaster" is oxymoronic at face value, invoking a cognitive dissonance based on the value we've assigned to "natural" things. These associations are positive and warm, yet once nature acts in ways humanity deems anti-human or against us, we quickly label them "unnatural".

This project uses found footage of unnatural disasters caught on tape - ranging from forest wildfires to avalanches - and imbued them with noise and distortion until they resembled a digital glitch.

The sound design uses elements from nature: birds chirping, wind blowing, waves crashing, and fire crackling to emphasize the inseparable naturality of these events.
