Keeping Up With East New York (2019)

To transplant is to uproot and replant. Nearly everyone I know has transplanted their lives. The concept of an NYC "transplant" is what inspired this work. I wanted to shine a light on the gentrification of East New York - an often overlooked community of culture, loyalty, and life.

"East New York’s culture is in the process of being rewritten by gentrification. The neighborhood is currently divided by a park. A seemingly unifying landmark serves as the complete opposite in this neighborhood. You might wonder, what is that division of? The literal answer: new houses that are being listed at a million dollars, and homes that have been passed down from generations of families. The not-so-literal answer: groups of individuals that worked hard to maintain their presence and culture who are being ousted by people who have the luxury to go wherever they please."
